About propolis
Propolis is a resin that bees process and use to build and protect their hive. In its raw form, it is dense, sticky and difficult to handle in water. Extraction therefore plays an important role in the production of liquid propolis products.
Standardised polyphenol content
Standardisation means that certain specified constituents in the extract are present in controlled amounts. This provides more precise information about the composition than the weight of the propolis extract alone. The extract weight and polyphenol content are two separate measures: the former describes the whole extract, while the latter refers to specific components within it.
Processing to reduce allergenic components
The manufacturer states that the raw material is processed using the bacterium Lactobacillus helveticus LH5. The method is based on the bacterium's cinnamoyl esterase activity. Laboratory research on propolis has used this type of biotransformation to reduce certain caffeic acid esters while preserving the flavonoid fraction under investigation.
Processing technique and allergic sensitivity
The effect in the research depended on the strain, making the choice of this particular microorganism important to the process. The technique does not mean that the product is allergen-free. Propolis is a natural material and may still cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
