Astra Yerba Mate

Product Overview

Astra - Yerba Mate is a classic South American herbal product from the well-regarded brand Astra, known for its careful handling of natural plant products. This product consists of dried leaves and finely chopped stems from the Ilex paraguariensis plant, traditionally used to prepare both hot and cold infusions. Yerba mate has a long history in South America, where it is appreciated both for its unique flavour and for the social ritual of sharing a drink. Astra has embraced this heritage and offers a product focused on quality and authentic character.

The product is available in different pack sizes, suited to both beginners and experienced mate drinkers. It is ideal both for those looking to try an alternative to coffee and tea and for those who enjoy brewing it in the traditional way, for example in a gourd with a bombilla. Astra follows a clear philosophy of providing pure, natural ingredients without additives, reflected in the product’s flavour and versatility.

Active Ingredients & Science

Yerba mate naturally contains xanthines such as caffeine, theobromine and theophylline, which are central to its character. The caffeine in yerba mate, often called mateine, is known for providing milder, longer-lasting stimulation compared with coffee. These components are absorbed by the body through the gastrointestinal tract and are then metabolised in different ways, affecting both the taste experience and the physiological effect.

Benefits & Uses

• Suitable for anyone looking for a flavourful alternative to coffee and black tea, with a mild herbal character.
• Ideal for social occasions where the drinking ritual is part of the experience, such as sharing a brew from a gourd with a bombilla.
• Can be brewed hot or cold, making it versatile for different seasons and preferences.
• A natural ingredient for anyone who wants to experiment with their own tea or drink blends.
• Offers a complex flavour profile with roasted, grassy and nutty notes, suited to both beginners and experienced mate enthusiasts.

Use & Dosage

For best results, use approximately 50 grams of yerba mate per gourd, or 1 to 2 tablespoons per cup for a traditional infusion. The product can be brewed with hot water at approximately 70–80 °C to preserve the flavours and avoid bitterness. For cold brewing, leave the drink to steep in the refrigerator for a few hours. Yerba mate can be consumed on an empty stomach or with a meal, although individual experiences may vary. Try combining it with mild herbs such as mint for a fresher flavour.

Quality & Manufacturing

Astra takes care to ensure high quality throughout the production chain. The raw materials are harvested under controlled conditions, with a focus on purity and naturalness and without added chemicals or preservatives. Production follows strict hygiene procedures and quality testing to ensure that every batch meets the brand’s standards for flavour and shelf life. Astra places great importance on ensuring its products reflect an authentic sense of their South American origins.
