Folic acid, also known as folacin or vitamin B9, is an organic chemical compound from the B vitamin group. It is naturally synthesised by intestinal bacteria and also occurs in the leaves of green plants such as spinach or cabbage. Its active form in the body is levofolic acid, or 5-MTHF. Folic acid can reduce the risk of neural tube defects in children [Art. 14].

Folacin stimulates and participates in cell division [ID 193], and also takes part in the production of blood cells [ID 79]. It is also a substrate in amino acid synthesis [ID 195].
